Les Roues Vertes is situated on the edge of this medieval town. We are within easy walking distance of the town and all its’ amenities including good restaurants serving high quality french cuisine. There are several bars & pavement cafes for relaxing drinks and snacks.
Supermarkets, boulangeries, charcuteries, antique shops and even a Limoges porcelaine outlet open to the public. There is a twice weekly market in the town square. There is also a Cinema in the town which shows new films in English. These are noticeable by having the letters V.O by the name of the film.
There is certainly plenty to do all year round with Horse racing events in June, July and August, a National Horse Show (show jumping) in September, a sound & light show, craft days, as well as concerts, tennis, fishing, sailing and windsurfing.
The town is steeped in history, according to legend the cultural capital of the Basse Marche owes its’ name to the guilded angel perched on the summit of the collegiale “Lou Dora” bell tower. Throughout history the Town has lived through troubled times: besieged by the Black Prince (the Prince of Wales) in 1356, the Town was also badly damaged during the war of the religions.
Le Dorat was a town of nobility and property owners. A small detour down a narrow street will show you the old houses full of character. A fortified town in the past, Le Dorat still has its’ 15th century Porte Bergere (shepherds gate). It’s the only one in the region.
